At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives said.
