Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 others were hurt in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the property near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the location and another man who escaped following the incident was located soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene revealed the property turned into a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
