Illegal dumpers have discarded a massive amount of garbage in a open space in Oxfordshire.

The "ecological disaster developing in plain sight" is up to 150m (490ft) extending and 6m (20ft) tall.

The enormous mound has been discovered in a plot of land alongside the River Cherwell in the vicinity of Kidlington.

A local MP brought up the problem in parliament, stating it was "posing risk of an ecological catastrophe".

Protection organization said the illegal garbage pile was formed approximately a recently by an criminal network.

"This represents an environmental catastrophe taking place in full view.

"Every day that passes raises the danger of hazardous seepage entering the river system, contaminating fauna and endangering the health of the complete watershed.

"River levels are rising and temperature readings show that the garbage is also increasing in temperature, raising the threat of fire.

"The Environment Agency reported it has inadequate funding for compliance, that the projected price of removal is larger than the whole yearly allocation of the local district council."

Government official said the administration had taken over a underperforming disposal business that had resulted in an "growing issue of unlawful waste disposal".

She told representatives the agency had issued a access ban to stop more entry to the area.

In a statement, the authority stated it was examining the matter and asked for evidence.

It stated: "We share the community's concern about situations like this, which is why we respond against those accountable for illegal dumping."
