Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories Following Player Detentions

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match since guard Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half scores to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards said Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."

Other NBA Outcomes

In other games, Los Angeles Lakers player Luka Doncic scored over forty scores for the second game in a row to begin the campaign.

After racking up 43 scores in a season-opening defeat to the Golden State, the European star achieved forty-nine points - along with eleven boards and 8 assists - as the Lakers beat the Timberwolves 128 to 110.

From Greece forward Antetokounmpo also had a big night with 31 scores, 20 rebounds and 7 passes in the Bucks' 122-116 win at the Raptors.

Rockets were defeated 115 to 111 by the Detroit Pistons despite thirty-seven scores from Durant, while Wembanyama had twenty-nine scores, 11 boards and nine rejections in the San Antonio Spurs' extra-time victory against the Pelicans.
