The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
