Three Lions Coach Explains His Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”
Obsession with Details
Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both test boundaries. The approach feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own the entire field and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we must clarify it during that time. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with each player. We have to spend time in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are emotional wins for managers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are really trying to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.
He completed the course as the best in his year, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Chelsea was Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
