The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezers in an flat in western Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, situated in the Innsbruck area.

Two men, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed police last week that there had been an accident—but rejected murder.

Informing reporters earlier, a official for the legal authorities stated the brothers were being detained on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

Personal details of those concerned have not been disclosed by authorities, in compliance with local legislation.

The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities stated the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then found to have been used in foreign locations several times.

But when investigators examined the victim's residence, her mobile phone was discovered.

An individual also reported hearing a loud noise in the flat, and cries of "mama" on the date the two were thought to have disappeared.

A wider criminal probe was started, with authorities uncovering multiple communications transmitted via the mother's device—including a job termination message to her employer and communications to the male colleague.

Authorities said a amount in the thousands was also transferred to the individual.

Katja Tersch told the press on recently that a rented space had been secured before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been installed within.

The male siblings took out the cooling unit from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter disappeared, she revealed. And a shortly afterward, they obtained a second unit.

Investigators state they believe this indicates the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"How they died could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the bodies," the official stated.

A legal representative—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the precise timeline is still unclear, but the remains were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a earlier inspection.

While the brothers were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until November 12 that the elder brother confessed to an occurrence and to storing the victims. He disputes any plan to cause death, authorities confirmed.

In a related development, his younger brother admitted to a cover-up but rejected involvement in a homicide.

The brothers are currently in custody awaiting trial in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "alleged double murder... constitutes the abrupt and violent termination of two individuals and exposes a cruel system".

"Women and girls are being killed due to the sole reason that they are female," they continued.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
